“Mediterraneo” an exceptional opera project in collaboration with artists from Syria, will be presented by the Kleine Barockband and the Theater Morgenstern in August 2016.
This baroque pasticcio project will be developed in July and August and presented at the end of August in the refugee accommodation in the Friedenau Town Hall. It is a social project which which fosters dialogue, exchange and mutual inspiration between young German musicians and artists from Syria.
The Kleine Barockband, an ensemble of the Leo-Kestenberg Music School, directed by Matthias Haase, will be joined by South African stage director Kobie van Rensburg, singers Celina Jimènez Haro, Stelina Apostolopoulou, Amèlie Saadia, Iddo Bet Hallahmi, Robert Macfarlane, and William Kwiatkowski, as well as young Syrian musicians, to create a a work that combines baroque performance practice with modern projection techniques to make a gripping, multicultural, multilingual evening of music theatre that addresses themes of Mediterranean crossings, homelessness and exile.
The universal language of music makes intensive communication around the complex and highly emotional themes of displacement possible - pain, rage and grief over the loss of a former homeland can be expressed from a highly personal point of view. At the same time “Mediterraneo” looks forwards, with themes of integration in a new setting and the discovery of new European cultures.
Rehearsals and performances will take place in the refugee accommodation of the Friedenau Town Hall. Music education initiatives from experienced music therapists for the residents of the Friedenau Town Hall and the communal accommodation of Handjerystrasse bring refugees into contact with European music culture.
